New Transformer Installed At 3rd Avenue Substation |
| |
January 18, 2006 - Paragould's electrical capacity is going to increase greatly with the recent addition of a new transformer at PLWC's 3rd Avenue Substation.
American Crane Co., a Jonesboro based crane service, put the transformer into place at the substation. The transformer is rated at 33 megavolt amps (MVA), which means it will be able to handle much more energy than its predecessor. The former transformer, which was rated at 22 MVA's, was moved to the 5th St. Substation and the transformer at this location was put out of service after nearly 40 years in the system.
"It was not feasible to have the other transformer repaired," said Butch Johnson, Electric Service Manager at PLWC. Johnson added that PLWC decided to get a transformer that could handle a larger load because of Paragould's expected growth..
If more than five non-profit agencies apply to take part in Round Before the transformer could be put into place at the substation, numerous renovations had to be made, such as the installation of new breakers, switches, insulators and relay equipment. A new control house was also built on-site to house a new computer monitoring system that will allow PLWC to better monitor the activities within the substation. Construction of an oil detainment pit and a new concrete pad for the transformer to sit on has was also part of the renovation.
In addition, fiber optic cable has been run to the substation, completing the last link in the fiber loop around Paragould, which is connected to all eight substations, providing a higher reliability of electric service.
The new transformer weighs about 148,000 pounds and can hold up to 6,000 of oil. The new transformer was purchased from Waukesha Electric Systems. The transformer has a five year warranty.
